What is Adobe Photoshop:

                           Adobe Photoshop is a widely-used raster graphics editing software developed and published by Adobe Inc. It is a widely used software application that allows users to edit and manipulate digital images. It is considered the industry standard for image editing. It provides a comprehensive range of tools and features for both professionals and enthusiasts. It is a powerful tool used by photographers, graphic designers, artists, and other creative professionals to manipulate and enhance digital images.  With Photoshop, users can perform a wide variety of tasks. Adobe Photoshop offers extensive features and tools that allow users to edit, retouch, compose, and create images with high precision and creativity.

History of Photoshop:

                        Photoshop was developed in 1987 by two brothers Thomas and John Knoll, who sold the distribution license to Adobe Systems Incorporated in 1988. On his Macintosh Plus, University of Michigan Ph.D. candidate Thomas Knoll started building a program to display grayscale graphics on a monochrome display. His brother John, who worked for Industrial Light & Magic, was interested in this application (then called Display), and suggested that Thomas expand it into a full-fledged picture editing program. In 1988, Thomas took a six-month hiatus from his studies to work on the program with his brother. The name ImagePro was already in use when Thomas renamed the program. Later that year, Thomas changed the name of his application to Photoshop and struck a short-term agreement with scanner vendor Barneyscan to distribute copies of the program with a slide scanner; a "total of about 200 copies of Photoshop were shipped".

                     John took this opportunity to visit Silicon Valley where he showed the application to Russell Brown, the creative director at Adobe, and engineers at Apple Computer. Following the success of both presentations, Adobe opted to buy the distribution license in September 1988. Thomas continued to write code in Ann Arbor while John continued to work on plug-ins in California. On February 19, 1990, Photoshop 1.0 was solely made available for Macintosh. Advanced color editing tools that were removed from the initial Adobe delivered version were included in the Barneyscan version. With each new Adobe release, color handling gradually got better, and Photoshop quickly overtook it as the industry standard for digital color editing. When Photoshop 1.0 was first introduced, simple photo editing on specialized high-end systems (such the Scitex) cost about $300 an hour. In 1990, Photoshop 1.0 for Macintosh cost $895 on the list.

                   At first, Photoshop was only accessible via a Mac. Seetharaman Narayanan, the main architect of Adobe, adapted Photoshop to Microsoft Windows in 1993. Photoshop was able to reach a larger mass market audience thanks to the Windows version as Microsoft's global presence grew over the following few years. Adobe paid Thomas and John Knoll $34.5 million on March 31, 1995, for the rights to Photoshop, allowing Adobe to stop paying a royalty for each copy sold.

  

                 In 2003 Adobe included Photoshop in their Adobe Creative Suite, which bundled the program with Illustrator, InDesign, and Acrobat, and the next year it renamed the program Photoshop CS. Since 2007, when Adobe Photoshop CS3 was released, the program has offered features that give users greater control over their digital images. In 2013 Adobe announced that future versions of Photoshop and its other software would be available only through an Internet subscription service called Adobe Creative Cloud.
